Six Months of Guild Wars 2

Posted By on March 25, 2013

I’ve been slacking off big time on writing on this blog. I have a great excuse, though. I’ve also been having a lot of trouble finding motivation to do real life things and take care of my responsibilities. Why? I’m addicted. My favorite hobby and pastime is back, finally, after more than a ten-year lull. I have an MMORPG to call home.

Here we are, six months after the release of Guild Wars 2. I’m loving almost everything about the game just as much or more than I did during that first beta event almost a year ago. I’ve got more than 1,200 hours played under my belt, with four level 80 characters and another one to level 17. I’ve done map completion, completed the personal story three different ways, done all the jumping puzzles, and played a truly surprising amount of WvWvW PvP. I’ve never been a PvP person, but the massive world 3-server PvP in Guild Wars 2 has converted me 100%.

I guess it’s probably clear that the game works for me. Even after all those things I’ve done and the massive amount of time played, all the achievements completed and objectives reached, there are still innumerable goals that I’m interested in tackling, and the game is still just plain fun. I can’t wait to log in every day.

My little guild that shares the name of this blog has “merged” with a much larger and more active guild, full of interesting and fun people. I say merged in quotes because there were really only three people in my guild who played actively…I took several months off from recruiting and not surprisingly, things dwindled. I was just too wrapped up in my own goals and enjoying the game with my wife. So the three of us daily players joined a new guild, and that too has brought another set of goals and achievements for which to strive. Everywhere you turn in this game, there are things to work towards and fun to be had.

Just last weekend, I finally caved in (due to the new preview feature on the trading post and my newly max-level Mesmer) and decided to start working on a legendary weapon. The Bifrost staff looks awesome, and fits quite well for my character…and I have no doubt that my Mesmer will continue to primarily use a staff for a long time to come in WvW. I’ve spent a significant amount of time working on her build, and I think I’ve got it just about exactly where I want it. Due to all of that, I figured it was time to jump in with both feet and test my mettle against the hardest achievement in the game.

I had been staying away from that whole can of worms (legendary weapons)…The amount of farming and work required is daunting, to say the least, and there really wasn’t a legendary weapon that stood out to me as fitting any of my characters well enough to warrant the investment required. Now that I’m in the hunt, so to speak, I suited myself up with magic find gear and parked my warrior character in the best farming location in the game. I’ll likely do little else for the next few months, and then hopefully my Mesmer will be kicking butt in WvW with a truly epic staff.

I feel like ArenaNet is doing an admirable job for the most part managing and updating their game. There have definitely been bumps in the road…Buggy releases, poor design decisions, etc. On the whole, however, the direction is good and they have done very well sticking to the spirit of their vision and the careful line with their gem store. I’m truly impressed and quite graciously spend a bit of money each month or so on gems…I have no problem supporting this game monetarily considering the unbelievable amount of play time and fun I’ve gotten out of it.

Basically everything I believed about this game’s longevity is proving true, at least in my own experience. I’ll be playing for a long time.

More to come, as the story continues.
